One of the most helpful and impactful things I've ever done to help myself grow as a photographer was to have my portfolio critiqued. It was through these critiques that I gained the sort of candid feedback that truly helped me break through to new heights as a photographer. A productive portfolio critique isn't about letting you know how strong your work already is as much as it is meant to expose areas where you can spend time and grow.
With both the Premium Critique and Standard Critique options, you will provide ten photos of your choosing for review. From there, we will begin the process of reviewing your photos. What’s important to note about this sort of critique is that it isn’t so much about correcting or re-editing your photos. Rather, the goal is to shine a light on areas where you can grow by challenging you to approach your photos differently.
At the end of your critique, I will provide you with a private and secure cloud-based URL where you can stream and download your session. I will also provide Photoshop PSD copies of each of your submitted photos that include my markups.
Ultimately, you can get as much out of this process as you put in. Choose ten photos that best represent who you are as a photographer. They don’t all have to be from the same shoot or time. They can vary by genre and style. They should be a window into how you approach photography. With that said, I highly recommend you take the time to address basic photo corrections like straightening your horizon lines and removing dust spots and scratches before submitting your photos as that will make the entire process more enjoyable for everyone involved.
I’m very excited about this Premium Critique option because I strongly believe that having a live conversation about your photos is an excellent way to foster growth. It gives me the opportunity to ask you questions about your rationale and execution of your submitted photos and provides the opportunity for you to ask your own questions about the feedback as it’s delivered.
I will provide you with a private and secure cloud-based folder for you to upload your ten images to. I will then provide you with an online scheduling URL where you can select a time slot to conduct our live critique. The critique will be conducted using either Skype or Google Meet, depending on your requirements. The critique is limited to 60 minutes with a 10 minute buffer to establish connectivity and iron out any technical issues. You are responsible for securing a fast and reliable internet connection and a computer with a microphone and camera (although the video feed on your end is optional).
Our live critique will be recorded and upon its conclusion, it will be made available to you via a private and secure URL. You will be able to stream or download the video and it will be playable on any computer or mobile device.
The Standard Critique option is ideal for those who prefer a more hands-off approach to their review. With this option, I will provide you with a private and secure cloud-based folder for you to upload your ten images to. Once they have been received, I will review them for any up-front issues and then begin my recorded critique.
My goal is to deliver your recorded critique video within ten days after you submit your photos. Your personalized critique video will be made available to you via a private and secure URL. You will be able to stream or download the video and it will be playable on any computer or mobile device.
WHAT FILE TYPES CAN I SUBMIT FOR MY CRITIQUE?
You can supply any file type you prefer. For the sake of ensuring a high quality experience, I recommend sending either full resolution JPEG files, Adobe DNG files, or RAW files with their associated sidecar files.
WHAT SORT OF COMPUTER WILL I NEED FOR A LIVE CRITIQUE?
At the very least, I recommend having a microphone connected to your computer so that we can speak with each other. I recommend securing quiet surroundings and minimize distractions. I am a big fan of face-to-face conversations, so I also recommend using a webcam. I recommend the Logitech C920 as a capable and affordable option.
WHAT SORT OF INTERNET CONNECTION DO I NEED?
If you plan on reserving a spot for a Premium One-on-One critique, you'll need to ensure that you have a fast, consistent internet connection because of the nature of the live video.
HOW WILL WE SCHEDULE A TIME FOR A PREMIUM ONE-ON-ONE CRITIQUE?
Once you submit your order for the Premium Critique option, I will send you a URL with a list of available time slots. I want to make it as convenient as possible for you and will offer a variety of morning, afternoon, evening and weekend options for you to choose. We will use a service called Calendly to lock in our time slot.
HOW WILL WE CONDUCT OUR LIVE CRITIQUE?
Each Premium Critique session includes a 10-minute buffer to isolate any connectivity or technology issues. This is followed by our 60-minute live session to critique your ten photos. Sessions are capped at 60 minutes.
We will conduct our live chat using a video conferencing service called Zoom. It is a reputable and well-known service that I've had great experiences with. I recommend you use their Test Feature before our session to ensure technical and web browser compatibility.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO COMPLETE A CRITIQUE
I aim to deliver standard critique videos within 10 days after the portfolio photos are provided to me. I also intend on completing critiques in the order that reservations are made.
SHOULD I ONLY PROVIDE MY OWN PHOTOS FOR CRITIQUE?
Yes, to say the least. You must be the rightful copyright owner of each photo you submit. I will not be held responsible for any copyright violations encountered as part of your critique session.
WILL YOU PROVIDE RE-EDITED VERSIONS OF MY SUBMITTED PHOTOS?
No. The purpose of a critique is not to re-edit your photos but to analyze and discuss them as you present them to me. While I may apply an edit to help visualize what I’m talking about, it will be for illustrative purposes only.
HOW WILL YOU PERFORM YOUR CRITIQUE ON MY PHOTOS?
I've found that the easiest and most clear way to convey my thoughts on your photos is to open them up in Photoshop and use a brightly colored pen tool to "draw" on them. This will make things much easier for you to visualize the feedback provided. I will provide these Photoshop PSD files with my markups along with your recorded critique session.
HOW CAN I WATCH MY CRITIQUE VIDEO?
Upon the conclusion of my recording or our live session, I will render an HD video file (.mp4 format) and embed it in a private, password-protected webpage for you to access. You will be able to stream and download the video from that webpage.
WHAT IF I HAVE TO RESCHEDULE OUR LIVE SESSION?
I understand that life can get in the way of even the best laid plans. If you need to reschedule, I ask that you provide me with at least 24 hours. I will then send you a new URL to reschedule. You are entitled to reschedule with at least 24 hours notice once at no fee.
Additional reschedules will incur a $100 fee for each change.
IS THERE AN OPTION FOR FOLLOW-UP CRITIQUE SESSIONS?
Absolutely. I will offer special pricing options for existing Portfolio Critique customers who wish to have follow-up sessions with existing or new images.
WILL YOU SHARE MY CRITIQUE ON YOUR WEBSITE?
Absolutely not. The recorded video from both the Premium and Standard critiques are for you and you alone. I will not share any part of it anywhere on my website. You are entitled to share the video as you see fit.
IS THERE A REFUND POLICY FOR CRITIQUE SESSIONS?
I want you to feel completely confident about your Critique Session and will go to great lengths to show you the value of them. With that said, if you have placed an order for a Premium or Standard critique and it has not yet been completed, I will issue you a full refund less a $50 processing fee. No refund will be issued for critiques that have already been completed.
